Question Wednesday: The Great Commission

People visibly settle back, close their Bibles without turning a page and look up blankly as I tell them what verse to look for. It's Matthew 28, near the end of the chapter where Jesus gives the "Great Commission." They've heard it a million times. They know all about it.

Do they? Really?

"Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age'" (Matthew 28:16-20 NRSV).

Let me ask:

1) To whom was this "Great Commission" addressed?

2) What is Jesus saying to do?

3) What does Jesus mean by "make disciples of all nations"?

4) Who is to be made into disciples?

5) What is a "disciple" according to this passage and other words of Jesus?

I'm planning to do a series on this topic soon. I want to see what readers and fellow bloggers think before I start, though.
